This site emulates the Digital Writing Classrooms the Young Writers Project sets up for schools and teachers in Vermont and N.H. We have modified it slightly for use here by interested teachers from all over.
This site has an open group -- Digital Teachers Space -- for registered users to post questions, blogs, experiences, best practices for this growing community to use. This is a NEW community so it takes some bold steps to be the first to create a community.
This site also has a closed group for participants in the Digital Writing Practicum, a Master's Level course given by the YWP during the school year. Credits are certified through St. Michael's College.
So here's how to get going:
Log in.
If you already have an account, log in and write away
. If you are new, feel free to register and sign in. YOU MUST HAVE A WORKING EMAIL ADDRESS to activate your account -- a message will be sent with your first, one-time login that must be used within 24 hours.
If you wish to change your password click "My account" and "Edit."
Navigation. Once you log in, you will see in the upper left hand column a series of navigational links. Here is what they do:
- My classroom will take you to a link to the "classrooms" or groups on this site of which you are a member. Click the classroom link and you will be able to see the latest posts in that group or classroom. Once in your classroom, tabs will direct you to assignments, assignment tags and a list of students. (Note: To see another student's work, click on the "Class Members" tab, click on their name and click on "view recent content created by..."
- My classmates' posts allows you to see all of the work by other participants in your grup -- and teachers. You will see tabs that say: "My posts" or posts in your classroom, "My unread" or posts that you have not yet read, and "Recent Posts" or posts made by students elsewhere on the site.
- My posts and comments will take you to a listing of all the work you have done, including posts (stories and blogs), comments and attachments.
- Create an Assignment is a link for instructors on this site to create an assignment or a suggested writing prompt.
- Create a Blog entry is a link for the basic content type on this site. If you are in the Digital Writing Practicum, use it to post responses to assignments or to share experiences with the rest of the class. If you are a teacher posting to the Digital Teacher Space, use this type for anything you write.
- [*Create a Video and/or Create a Video Mix is a feature that will be added later in the year.]
- Create a Wiki is a link to create a wiki or a document that can be edited by anyone on the site. If you are creating a resource page, feel free to use this content type if you'd like others to add to what you've started.
- [*Image Galleries is a feature that will be added later.... This is a link to the image galleries on your site. This may include work from other classrooms. You also will have the ability to create a new gallery.
- Upload Multiple Images is a link for teachers to upload a batch of photos at once.]
- News Feeds is a link to news feeds set up from various education and information sources. In the schools' sites, teachers use these feeds to bring in all varieties of content for the students to blog about.
- My Account is where you can change your password.
- Administer is a link for teachers participating in the Practicum to do some basic plumbing on the site. YWP is happy to make any administrative changes or fixes. Just contact us by email: Geoffrey Gevalt or by phone: (802) 324-9537 or 324-9538 or 324-9539
- Log out is something you should click any time you are finished on the site.
